InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) stock is facing resistance from its 50 day SMA, but there is a good possibility that it will be back in bullish territory soon. Resistances from the 50 day SMA and the 43.25 level need to be crossed convincingly. The technical indicators are supporting the bullishness. Once volume shows up I expect it will take off. Hold.

InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) stock has just started moving higher and established a short term up-trend. Momentum indicators are slightly bullish now with RSI inching away above the middle level. The strongest sign of a bullish momentum is the MACD indicator which is currently above the 0 line and DI+ crossed above DI-. Watching for $43.09 breakout. This momentum could push this stock much higher from here, so keep the stock on your radar for Wednesday’s trading day, as there is good upside potential in this move. If the stock breaks its 50-day MA at 43.09 the initial target is $45, followed by $49.23.

Und das passt zum morgigen Tag

Speculative Trade Idea: Buyout of InterDigital Inc.

Interdigital Inc. (IDCC) announced July 19th, 2011 that it has “initiatied a process to explore & evaluate potential strategic alternatives for the compnay, which may include a sale or orther transaction.”
The company is considering a sale because Apple, ECM, Microsoft, RIM, Ericsson, and Sony bid $4.5 Billion dollars to acquire the bankrupt Nortel’s 6,000 cellular patents. Apple itself paid $2.6 Billion. The reason why these companies are willing to shell out so much money for patents is because patents and licensing play a pivotal role in tech companies' margins – margins that translate to billions of dollars. As you can see from the graphic to the right, the technology giants are at all out war.

According to M Partners, an independent Toronto investment advisory firm, the Nortel sale averaged $750,000/patent, MOSAID's sale of 18 patents deemed "non-strategic" averaged $610,000/patent, and 882 Novell Patents were sold to another consortium for $510,000/patent. With the current stock valuation hovering near the $38-45 range that brings IDCC's patents currently being valued by the market to around $80,000. Which is obviously grossly undervalued when compared to other recent sales of technology patents that have taken place ove the last year. It should be noted all three of these transactions took 10-14 months for the sales to go through once "strategic alternatives" were announced to the public. We are currently on month 6 for the IDCC buyout talks.

After the intial huge gap up of the possible buy-out announcement the stock jumped from $43 to an $80 range because many people believed that Google would be fighting Apple for IDCC's patent portfolio, and subsequently a majority of the wireless phone realm. The stock plummetted and then drifted all the way back down to $39 over the course of 4 months because Google ended up buying Motorola Mobility Inc. (MMI) for a cash buyout of $12.5 Billion. Many people believe Google had "it's date for the intellectual property party," however when evaluating the quality and value of the patents MMI held this thesis could certainly be challenged. Once again according to MPartners, MMI's patents were broady based and could use be used in a lawsuit against other android makers like HTC, LG, or Samsung but could not battle Apple, and Microsoft/Nokia. When they were apart of the Nortel consortium, they bought the lower quality patents. Google approached MMI to buy them in mid-july because MMI was in litigation with Microsoft and Apple. If MMI lost or settled the suits then their patents they acquired could target the android phone makers of HTC, Samsung, and LG which would jeaprodize the whole Android Ecosystem. So to protect the ecosystem and make their own phone the way they exactly want it, Google bought MMI. Now that Google has the capability to make their own revolutionary phones, I still believe Google is still very much in the hunt for IDCC's patents because they could fight off Apple, and the Microsoft/Nokia parternships in future innovation battles in the 4G/LTE and HD mobile video compression arena. To further support the evidence of Google's appetite for patents Google confirmed it acquired over 1,000 patents from IBM in August 2011, the same month they bought MMI.

So the basic idea here is that there is a possible quiet bidding war going on for IDCC's top quality 3G & 4G/LTE cellular patents. The major possible consortiums are Google, LG, Samsung, HTC versus Apple and possible wild cards versus the Microsoft/Nokia mobile partnership. Now obviously the further the process goes, teams can break or form up and the companies can divvy up the certain patents they want. There is another company I did not mention that is pretty interesting investigate.

In late Q4, Intel Inc. was rumored to be leading a consortium of bidders for the IDCC patents and this surprised many investors. I was expecting Intel was gearing up to acquire some patents because I noticed in September 14, 2011, Intel announed and sold $5 Billion worth of bonds in two days to repurchase stock and "other general corporate purposes". That is pretty quick to announce/raise $5 Billion and take on long term debt to inflate a stock price that was in near a 2 year high. What I was looking at was the "other general corporate purposes," which is fancy for, "We are gearing up to make a run for IDCC to the tune of $5 billion dollars." What didn't make sense was that Intel wasn't really into the mobile phone arena yet. This has all changed with the recent announcment of the Intel Phone chip 32-nm SOC which they are challenging the currently untouchable European Giant ARM. I think Intel's aim is to garner many top IDCC 4G/LTE patents to gain a development edge in maximizing their technologies in conjunction with their new phone chips but also to force 4G/LTE phone makers to use their new chips or they won't let them use the necessary 4G/LTE technology that they own. I applaud the excutives of Intel if this is indeed their goal.

To summarize, this is a very speculative but also a fascinating investment idea.

If IDCC's top quality patent portfolio is bought, it should possible fetch around $200,000-$800,000 per patent when compared to previous deals of that nature. That is market cap range of $3.7 Billion - $14.8 Billion or a range in share price of $81-$325. With current shares trading near the $44 range, I would suggest to build small position in shares with a 10% stop loss or some LEAP options for January 2013

InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) traced out a nice setup and the upside breakout has a lot of power. Volume surged and this breakout looks like it is here to stay. Crossed its 50 day moving average and is probably heading for 49. There looks to be good upside in IDCC, so keep it on your radar the next few days. Some are speculating that Apple or Samsung might have an interest in buying this company. But there are also rumours that Google might want to buy this company. InterDigital owns an incredible number of very valuable patents, which could be a major incentive for a buyout.
